iSolveIt: MathSquared

iSolveIt: MathSquared is a prototype series of grid-based puzzles using basic math operations that help learners develop logical thinking and reasoning strategies.  Puzzles have different levels of challenge and include embedded support for solving, such as a Scratch Pad for recording information that supports problem solving and the option for immediate feedback on your progress.  Learners can also choose from different levels of puzzle challenge.  This app was developed to expand learning opportunities for all individuals through Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  iSolveIt is being developed as a mobile learning environment to support the development of logical thinking and reasoning skills, essential competencies for algebra and mathematics in general.

iSolveIt: MathScaled

iSolveIt: MathScaled is a prototype series of puzzles based on a balance-scale format.  The goal is to place different shapes with unknown weights on the scale so that it is balanced.  Puzzles have embedded supports for solving, such as a Scratch Pad for recording information and the option for immediate feedback on your progress.  Learners can also choose from different levels of puzzle challenge.  This app was developed to expand learning opportunities for all individuals through Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  iSolveIt is being developed as a mobile learning environment to support the development of logical thinking and reasoning skills, essential competencies for algebra and mathematics in general.

Panther Math paper

Panther Math paper allows you to do math independently without a pencil.  Special settings for beginning math and advanced math.  Comes with hundreds of problems to get you going!  An amazing tool for school and learning.  Built using principles of Universal Design.  An alternative for anyone who uses an iPad in school or work.  Alternative access for people with motoric disabilities or struggling learners.

Intro to Math

Created by Montesorium, a team of Montessori educators and parents, Intro to Math  they describe this app as a fun and interactive first step into the world of mathematics.  The app helps children develop basic math foundations; an understanding of numbers from 0-9; number symbols and their units;  sequence, order, and spatial relationships; an understanding of odds and evens;  problem-solving;; and fine motor skills.

Soroban

Developed by students with autism and asperger’sSoroban is an  abacus-styled animation game allows users to add, subtract, multiply and  divide up to seven digits.

Integrated Technology for Persons with Autism and Developmental Disabilities (ITPADD)

In the words of it’s developer, Mark Mautone, the  ITPADD app was developed to “meet the needs of many children that others do not.”   When downloaded to a mobile device, a student is able to access an individualized and portable curriculum.  The instructional applications include the following:

-Storybooks
-Activity schedules
-Expressive language skills
-Receptive language skills
-Math
-Reading
-Verbal imitation
-Reinforcers
-Task sequences
The app incorporates a customizable photo and audio library, photo capture feature (if used on the iPhone),  a callculator, tally counter, and multiple timers (vibration and audible alerts).  Two instructional videos posted below have been created by the developer.

Signing Science Pictionary

Designed for younger users than the Signing Science Dictionary, the Signing Science Pictionary is an illustrative, interactive 3D sign language pictionary containing 730 science terms defined in both ASL and Signed English.  It is targeted to students in grades K-3.   This is a product that was developed through collaboration between TERC and Vcom3D.  Like the other apps in this series, the user has control over the avatar who forms the sign you select, with the ability to change the avatar’s position and signing speed.   A Users Guide  for this app is available for download.

Grasshopper Apps

Grasshopper Apps has created a library of educational apps designed to teach a variety of skills to young children.  The developer describes them as easy to cutomize, allowing the adult to content of the app as well as the way in which the user physically interacts with it.  A list of available apps can be found on the Grasshopper website, and reviews can be found on the iTunes Grasshopper apps page.  Watch the video below to see one of the apps in the  “I Like”book  series.

Gravitarium

Gravitarium is a low-cost app that “combines music, art and science in one relaxing experience.”    There is a version for the iPad, and another version (Gravitarium SD) that works on iPhones, iPods, and iPads.  One review of this app point out its similarities to another app called Gravilux.  You might want to check them both out!   Click here for a video review of Gravilux.  The video  below demonstrates Gravitarium.  Turn up your volume so you don’t miss the music.
