Major Programs at the Rural Institute

Child Care Plus+: Center on Inclusion in Early Childhood

This program's mission is to share knowledge, foster skills, and encourage attitudes that promote inclusion as a core component of excellence in early childhood. This is accomplished by expanding child care options for children with disabilities, provide training and technical assistance for child care providers and other early childhood professionals, and seeking to improve the quality of the child care experience for all children.

Montana Deaf-Blind Project

This project is focused on increasing the capacity of service providers, educators, and families to support infants, young children, students, and youth who are deaf-blind.  Project staff provide information, professional development, consultation, and technical assistance services to those involved with individuals on the state’s census of individuals who are deaf-blind.


Montana Disability and Health Program

The goal of this program is to assess, monitor, improve and maintain the health of Montanans with disabilities through a strategic program that reduces secondary conditions by enhancing individuals' capacity to manage their own health and by developing supportive community environments.


MonTECH : Montana Assistive Technology Program

MonTECH is a comprehensive statewide resource for Assistive Technology (AT) information, devices, demonstrations, trainings, evaluations, and other AT-related supports. The programs overseen by MonTECH are intended to help Montanans with disabilities and those who are aging to access equipment and services to increase independence, productivity, and quality of life.



RTC:Rural - Research and Training Center on Disability in Rural Communities

RTC:Rural was established in 1988 as part of the Rural Institute at the University of Montana. RTC:Rural is funded by the National Institute on Rehabilitation Research to improve the ability of persons with disabilities to live independently in rural America.


Transition and Employment Projects

Projects in this program create and disseminate information on transition for youth with disabilities, customized employment, using Social Security Work Incentives and other related topics.  We also host webinar trainings on employment and transition, and provide onsite and long distance consultation and technical assistance to families, youth, schools, and agencies.
