Course Description:
This class will focus on the “what to teach” and “how to teach” questions that relate to quality programs for students with severe disabilities.  The principles and practices of systematic instruction will be introduced, providing the necessary foundation to develop an instructional program using these practices for a student with a severe disability. Various approaches to curriculum for students with severe disabilities will be reviewed, with an emphasis on teaching meaningful, age-appropriate skills that are needed to participate in inclusive school, community, and work environments. Finally, strategies that have been successfully used to teach students social, communication, and self-management skills will be addressed.

Class Format:
We will use a variety of activities and formats throughout the semester, with face-to-face class meetings occuring on-line through the use of videoconferencing and lotus learning space software. Use the syllabus to keep on track of scheduled activities and assignments. Any changes to the schedule will be announced in class and sent out to everyone over the class list serve. Throughout the semester, it is critical that you check your e-mail regularly to keep informed of class information.
