Bio

Dr. Rosemary Hughes, Senior Research Scientist at the Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities and Research Professor in the Department of Psychology, is the principal investigator of several federally funded research grants related to the health and safety of adults with disabilities. Her current research projects address interpersonal violence, weight management, unplanned pregnancy, and psychological health. Dr. Hughes holds a PhD in counseling psychology from the University of Houston, an MS in education from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, and a BA in sociology from St. Mary’s College, Leavenworth, KS. She is a licensed psychologist with clinical, teaching, and research experience in disability and health. Dr. Hughes has served as principal investigator on research grants or contracts investigating health promotion, stress, depression, self-esteem, aging, smoking cessation, and interpersonal violence in the context of disability. Dr. Hughes’ research projects have been funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research; the Christopher Reeve Foundation; and the National Institutes of Health. Her primary research focus is interpersonal violence in the context of disability, and her methodological approach is primarily community-based participatory research. Dr. Hughes has published more than 50 articles or book chapters and has presented nationally and internationally on the health and safety of people with disabilities.
