Description of effective Public Awareness and Child Find activities implemented in rural areas of your service region.
  • Radio, TV, newspaper, flyers, posters
  • Word of mouth from those that read or heard announcements. Written format seems to be more effective than audio. Mitch feels that you will also improve response if you run an advertisement all year.
  • Most important part of Public Awareness is to let them know who you are and what you do. A LOGO is the true key. People need to be able to consistently associate your logo with your agency. E.g. golden arches McDonalds, Nike swoop, etc.. They had their logo professionally designed.
  • Public awareness should be consistent and different from the rest. If your not serving 7%-10% per 1000 than you're not doing what your community is asking you to do.
Collaboration with other agencies in implementing public awareness or child find activities.
  • Problem with collaboration is that working with Head Start, DFS, WIC can be detrimental. Middle Class makes assumption that they do not qualify because of income. They don't seem to understand that the program is separate from Head Start and other programs. He feels we need to be very careful with collaboration. There needs to be a clear delineation between these programs that are not income based.
Process used to plan and implement public awareness and child find activities.
  • Communication is the key. Need to communicate at least once a month.
How does information regarding your services reach the most rural areas?
  • Tried sticky notes, prescriptions pads, etc. None of that works. What they have done is keep communication frequent. They also target the staff and nurses of doctors. They bring them cookies and brownies through out the year along with their card. Once again the importance of the logo that it is on the card as well as pamphlets. With the doctors they provide a breakfast at 6:30 or 7:30. This seems effective. As well as they take them bird hunting and give them their five-minute spiel.
