Description of effective Public Awareness and Child Find activities implemented in rural areas of your service region.
  • They exhibit at a lot of health and resource fairs.  If someone says that they are having a fair, they say to them, "we want to be there."  They set up booths, sometimes do screenings, if they can't do screenings they give families a lot of information where they can self-screen.
  • If any cultural events comes up in the community they also try to be there.  They want to be visible.
Collaboration with other agencies in implementing public awareness or child find activities.
  • They are part of the community management team which works in conjunction with the Children's Mental Health Program.  They are also part of a community resource coordinating group which is comprised of agencies that work with children through the age of 17.  There are about 7 agencies mandated by the State to sit on that group.  All six counties have a community resource coordinating group and they have staff that are assigned to be members of each group.
  • Other groups/organzation that the agency has personnel participate on are a local health coalition and an association for retarded citizens.  Every county has an individual social service group or networking group that gets together either once a month or quarterly and talks about what is going on in their programs.  They always have someone present at those meetings.
Process used to plan and implement public awareness and child find activities.
  • We make sure we have staff on all planning committees.  We also have a person that does a lot of contact with doctors and gets materials out, but every staff member has some responsibility to do public awareness.
