Job Description for MT-TIRC Advisory Board Members

MT-TIRC BACKGROUND
The mission of the Montana Transition Training, Information and Resource Center (MT-TIRC) is to provide access to timely, high quality transition information, training and resources for young people with developmental disabilities, their families, teachers, professionals, and other community members. MT-TIRC is funded through a three-year grant awarded by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities.   The project began on November 1, 2007.

ADVISORY BOARD
The MT-TIRC Advisory Board will have at least 12 members. Seven or more of these members will be young people (ages 13-30) with a developmental disability. The Board will help MT-TIRC staff:

  • Set priorities (decide what things are most important to work on)
  • Develop work plans
  • Craft products
  • Deliver training
  • Evaluate MT-TIRC activities

Board members will serve terms of 12, 15 or 18 months and may reapply for membership at the end of their term.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS OF BOARD MEMBERS
As a Board member you agree:

  • To learn about the MT-TIRC Project by attending web conferences whenever possible, reading Montana Transition Listserv messages and newsletters, and visiting the this Transition Projects web site.
  • To attend the scheduled Board meetings, which will usually take place four times per year (one time each quarter)
  • To notify MT-TIRC staff in advance if you are not able to attend a board meeting (Board members who miss two out of any four meetings may be replaced)
  • To serve on Board task forces and/or work groups as needed
  • To read, review and comment on Board-related materials sent to you  
  • To let MT-TIRC staff know if there are ways they can help you participate more fully in Board activities
  • To share your thoughts, ideas and opinions about transition and MT-TIRC activities with the Advisory Board
  • To work as a team member
  • To understand and practice meeting rules
  • To keep important information confidential (talk about it only with other Advisory Board members at the meetings)
  • To provide a short biographical sketch on a form provided by MT-TIRC staff for public relations activities

BENEFITS OF YOUR COMMITMENT
As a Board member:

  • You can help shape the Montana Transition Training, Information and Resource Center
  • Your travel expenses (lodging, mileage and meals) for attending Board meetings will be reimbursed at the current State rates
  • If you are a young person (age 13-30) with a developmental disability or a family member of a person with a developmental disability, you may be eligible for a stipend (payment) for the time you spend at Board meetings
  • You will meet other people interested and involved in transition planning for young people with developmental disabilities
  • You will have the chance to improve transition services in Montana

ACCESSIBILITY/ACCOMMODATIONS
The Board will meet in accessible locations. MT-TIRC staff can provide interpreters and other adaptive assistance if you tell them what you need ahead of time and if the assistance is available.
