Question 6

Question: I began receiving SSDI cash benefits in August 2003. I am 62 years old. Will I start receiving Medicare benefits in August 2005?

Answer: Yes, you should begin to receive Medicare in August 2005 because Medicare coverage begins 24 months after eligibility for benefits begins. In the meantime, if you have limited income and resources, you can apply for Medicaid from the state of Montana. You can call your nearest Office of Public Assistance and have them mail you an application and/or make an appointment to apply. Medicaid covers much more than Medicare so can really help reduce your out-of-pocket medical expenses. If your SSDI income is low enough, Montana Medicaid will pay for your Medicare once it starts in August, meaning the $78.20/month Medicare premium won’t come out of your SSDI check.
