Team Roles for
Workplace Success


STUDENT:

‚ Take your job seriously. Show up on time, appropriately dressed (as directed by your supervisor) and ready to work.
‚ Ask for help when you need it.
‚ Be courteous, friendly, respectful, and a team player.
‚ Remember that this is a work site – use office equipment for work-related tasks only, follow your employer’s rules about personal telephone calls and visits, and stay on task so you can complete your work in a timely manner.
‚ Be responsible. Keep your absences to a minimum and call your employer right away if you have to miss work because you are sick.
‚ Ask for more work when you’ve finished your current tasks.
‚ Communicate with your employer about any support needs you might have and suggest strategies to meet those needs.
‚ Learn as much as you can about the workplace and your job.
‚ Work hard. Remember that this experience or job can be a stepping-stone to other jobs.

FAMILY:

‚ Facilitate your son or daughter to be to work on time each day, properly dressed and ready to go.
‚ Remember that she/he is at a job – keep personal calls and visits to a minimum.
‚ Emphasize the importance of being reliable and following a work schedule - sometimes that means making difficult choices between fun activities and meeting employment obligations.
‚ Teach, model, and reinforce good work habits.
‚ Help your son or daughter communicate with the employer about any support needs he/she might have and suggest strategies to meet those needs.
‚ Recognize that a work experience position is a real job. It provides résumé material, valuable experience, connections, skills training, and even wages in some cases. Help your son or daughter take all work opportunities seriously.

TEACHER/JOB DEVELOPER/JOB COACH:

‚ Communicate expectations for job performance, behavior, and social interactions. Explain consequences for not meeting workplace expectations.
‚ Orient the student to the workplace and the employer to her/his role as mentor and supervisor.
‚ Help the student communicate with the employer about any support needs he/she might have and suggest strategies to meet those needs.
‚ Help the employer understand and capitalize on the student’s learning style.
‚ Allow the student employee to perform his/her job as independently as possible. Fade job coaching according to a reasonable and well-planned schedule.

EMPLOYER:

‚ Clearly communicate expectations for job performance, behavior, and social interactions. Model these expectations.
‚ Explain consequences for not meeting workplace expectations.
‚ Capitalize on employee learning styles.
‚ Teach the necessary skills to perform the job successfully.
‚ Provide the employee with regular feedback about his/her performance.
